Charles F. Smith, Jr., 89 of Acts Spring House Estates and formerly of Willow Grove, PA died Saturday in WillowBrooke Court after an extended illness. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Esther M. (nee Stoffel) Smith, Sr. Charles shared 61 years of marriage with his beloved wife Dorothy J. (nee Wright) Smith who predeceased him in 2016. He is survived by a sister, Norma Whitaker and husband Al of Plant City, FL and two sons: David and wife Cheryl of Kennett Square, PA; and Robert (Bob) and wife Michelle of Ambler, PA. He was the devoted and proud grandfather to 5 grandchildren: Douglas (wife Rachel), Gregory, Jennifer, Kristin, and Craig. Charles graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia. He was a two way player on Central's football team and received all-city honors. He was also a member of Central's champion track and field team where he ran the 100 yard dash and threw discus and shot put. He received a four year athletic scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania and was a four year letterman for the nationally ranked Penn Quakers football team which played home games at Franklin Field before sold-out crowds of 65,000...[more]

Upon graduation he served two years in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. at Fort Belvoir, VA. After military service he joined Acme Markets where for 21 years he held various corporate positions in their Philadelphia headquarters. This was followed by a 19 year career with Tartan Foods, an institutional food distributor, where he retired as executive vice-president in 1994. He was an active member of the Willow Grove Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served as a Trustee and sang in the church choir. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, June 14, 2019 after 11:30 AM at the Anton B. Urban Funeral Home, 1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler, PA. The funeral service will follow at noon with Chaplain Scott Wilson of SpringHouse Estates officiating. A private interment for family members will follow.
