George Alton Strother

George Alton Strother, 87, entered the gates of heaven on Tuesday, April 23rd 2019 in Austin, TX. He was born in his boyhood home near Glenmora, Louisiana on September 25, 1931 to Ernest and Pinkie Strother. He grew up on the family farm and attended Glenmora High School graduating in 1949 where he played basketball and softball. Shortly after high school, he moved to Port Arthur, Texas and began working for the DuPont Chemical Company in Orange, Texas. In 1950, George joined the U.S Navy and served most of his enlistment stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida where he worked as a jet engine mechanic. After his service, he returned to Port Arthur where he met Laura Crane. They were married in Houston in 1955 and had three children: Debbie, Tim and Todd. The family lived in West Orange and Orangefield during the time George worked at DuPont until he retired in 1985. He and Laura lived in several other places during their lifetime including Toledo Bend Lake, Chandler, Lake Palestine and Dripping Springs. Outside of work George had many interests. avid fisherman and spent many hours with friends and family fishing the ponds, rivers and lakes around the places he lived. He was a carpenter and in addition to the homes that he built for his family, he also helped build churches, youth camp buildings and parsonages. From the time that he played basketball in high school, he enjoyed watching basketball with his kids and grandkids. George is survived by his wife of 63 years Laura, his daughter Debbie and Chuck Harvey, son Tim and Mary Carole Strother, son Todd Strother, grandsons Ian and Rebecca Harvey, Matt and Callie Strother, Dylan Harvey, Aaron and Silvanne Strother, and Dalton Strother, one great grandson Quillen Harvey, a younger sister Jimmie Ruth Dunn and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Pinkie Strother, a brother Curtis Strother, and his older sisters Edna Peck and Helen Wales. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to First Baptist Church Dripping Springs.
