A funeral Mass for Mike Schmit, 84, of Algona with be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 PM at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona with a Scripture Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Michael Peter Schmit was born August 1, 1934, in St. Joseph, Iowa son of Peter and Sarah (Rowell) Wagner Schmit. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School thru the 11th grade graduating from St. Cecelia's Academy in Algona in 1952. Mike married Rosanne Erpelding on November 16, 1955, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Mike served in the United States army, stationed overseas in Germany returning to the area to farm. He was very passionate about farming enjoying getting up every morning and going to work. He loved being surrounded by his family and friends and especially attending his grand kid's activities. He enjoyed fishing and his annual trips with his buddies to Devil Rapids Camp. He also enjoyed hunting, nature, and his dog Axel. Schmit died Friday, July 12, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society Algona at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife Rosanne; his daughter, Denise Grandgenett and her husband Bill; and three grandchildren, Sophia, Emma, and Jack, all of Algona. He is also survived by a sister, Donna Thilges of Urbandale; his sisters-in-law, Mary Illa Kisch of Algona, Madonna (Gary) Johnson of Estherville, Janet (Lewis) Elbert of Clarkston, MI, Bonnie Erpelding of Algona; his brother-in-law, James (Judy) Erpelding of Golden, CO; as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren; and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Thomas Wagner; and four sisters, Dorothy (Thermon) Pruitt, Mary (Ed) Majerus, Sarah (Damian) Centgraf, and Cecilia (Leonard) McGuire. In-laws Ed Kisch, Gerald Erpelding, Maurice Erpelding and Marvin (Mary Katherine) Erpelding.
