Barbara L. Hummel

Barbara Hummel, 90, died Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Ft. Madison Community Hospital. She was born July 28, 1929, in Keokuk, IA., daughter of Selan & Mildred "Dockendorf" Howard. She married Lester Hummel, October 24, 1948, in Keokuk at St. Paul United Church of Christ. He preceded her in death on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2003. Barbara graduated from high school in 1948. After high school, she was employed at the telephone company until her son was born. Later, she worked at the YMCA as a receptionist and enjoyed several years as camp counselors for girls at Camp Paqotce. Barbara went to work as a secretary in Keokuk Community School System in 1970 and retired 21 years later in 1991. She loved to play golf and was a member of the Elks Fairview Lady Golfers. She enjoyed traveling and loved being with her son and grandchildren. Barb was especially proud of her two great grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. eceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband, daughter-in-law; Dixie Hummel, and sister; Sandy Thompson. Visitation will be Monday, December 30, 2019, at 12 pm until 1 pm at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 2030 Plank Road, Keokuk, with memorial service following Monday, December 30, 2019 at 1 pm with Reverend Milo VanVeldhuizen officiating. The body of Mrs. Hummel has been cremated per her request and burial will be in Oakland Cemetery following the memorial service.
