Areta Schmidt MUSCATINE, Iowa #45;- Areta Jennie Schmidt, 91, of 1739 N. Mulberry Rd., Muscatine, died Dec. 30, 2000, at Lutheran Homes in Muscatine. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Spangler Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Beverly Ingham Birtcher and Leland Eyres will officiate. Genice Reed will be organist and Vickie Anderson vocalist. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Greg Schmidt, Jim Massey, Steve Massey, Brad Pinnell, Jim Becker, Scott Davidson, Jim Burke and John Perimuha. Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon will be served at the church following the service. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in her memory. Mrs. Schmidt was born July 24, 1908, near Winfield, the daughter of Austin and Katie Bechler Snell. She married Carl C. Schmidt on Dec. 25, 1934, in Atallissa. He preceded her in death April 4, 1959. She graduated from Olds High School and the University of Iowa. ler Chapel United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Bloomington Grange, Bloomington Homemakers, National and Iowa State Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and Muscatine Area Retired Teachers Association. She was a former 4-H, Rural Youth, and Methodist Youth leader. In 1996 she was honored as an Outstanding Teacher in Iowa. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend who dedicated herself to serving others. She loved music, reading, writing, cooking and traveling. She was a multi-talented lady who did everything well. Survivors include a son, Bill Schmidt and his wife, Kathy, of Hebron, Ohio; two daughters, Sharon Steinke and her husband, Harley, of Tipton, and Joanne Massey of Muscatine; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister Gladys Meuller of Rock Island, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers.
