John 'Jack' Freiburger VII Services: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, funeral home. John Francis "Jack" Freiburger VII, 78, Davenport, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at his home. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Freiburger was born May 3, 1928, in Dubuque, the son of John Francis and Mabel Loretta Lee Freiburger VI. He married Elaine M. Gugelmeyer on Nov. 1, 1960, in Utah. He attended Lost Nation and Davenport schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He founded, owned and operated Freiburger Excavating, Davenport, retiring in 1999 after 45 years of service. In earlier years, he worked as a carpenter at the Rock Island Arsenal for 15 years. His hobbies included watching Westerns on television, motorcycles, spending time with his family and friends and the companionship of his African Grey Parrot, "Elvis". Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Penny Kaczinski and husband Jack and Peggy Smith and husband Kevin, all of DeWitt, and Patty Freiburger and Rick Bermel of Muscatine; a son, John Freiburger VIII and wife Merri of Bettendorf; two stepdaughters, Patricia McClendon and husband Dennis and Kathy Grinstead and husband Dan, all of Davenport; two stepsons, Dick Gugelmeyer and wife Jinx of Davenport and Mike Gugelmeyer of Hazel Green, Ala.; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Anderson of Moline, Ill.; a stepsister, Polly Stamp of Plainsville, Ill.; a stepbrother, Henry Scott of Maquoketa; and special friends, Ken Nolan and Harvey Bergert, both of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Edward; a sister, Bernice "Bunny" Williams; a brother, Walter Freiburger; and several stepsisters and stepbrothers.
