education at the University of Iowa. He was a member of Letts United Methodist Church and a life long farmer of the Letts area. He served as a Letts school bus driver and school board member for several years, the Louisa County assessor and ASCS committee member. He also helped organize and coach Louisa County boys and girls 4-H softball teams. He was a recognized and respected area and state champion of the game of horseshoes and belonged to both state and national associations. He was an inductee of the Iowa Horseshoe Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed watching and attending sports events, family gatherings, music, reading books and meeting with his McDonald's morning coffee friends. Survivors include two sons, B. Eugene Hafner and wife Mary of Wapello and James T. Hafner and wife Sandra of Sperry; five daughters, Z. Joyce Crull of Letts, Gae Ellen Crisman and husband Burton of Grand Junction, Colo., Marianna Masteller and husband Edwin of Erie, Pa., Marjorie Golden and husband James of Grand Junction and Gloria Newell of Columbus Junction; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hetzler of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Harry Hafner and Dale Hafner; a sister, Adelia Klipstein; a granddaughter, Julie Masteller; and two sons-in-law, Fay Crull and Russell Newell.
