John William "J.W." Scranton, age 91, of Quincy, died Friday, August 13, 2021, at 11:55 pm in Illinois Veterans' Home, Hammond Hall. John was born March 22, 1930 in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, the son of Henry and Orpha Long Scranton. He married Deloris Elaine Van Order on September 21, 1951 in Hull, IL. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2014. John served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Alaska from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953. John had a variety of jobs throughout his life, but the majority of his professional career was spent farming, and he farmed in the Pleasant Hill, Hull, and Rensselaer, MO areas from the 1950s through the early 1980s. John also owned rental properties in Pleasant Hill. During the 1960s and 1970s John was employed by Dundee Cement. He also worked as a carpenter for several years in the early 70s, during which time he owned and operated Scranton Hardware in Pleasant Hill. John was a school teacher for almost 10 years, and he taught school in Hannibal, Mo; Baton Rouge, LA; Kentucky; and Kinderhook, IL. John eventually settled in Quincy, and he has been living at the Illinois Veterans' Home since 2019....[more]

Survivors include three children: Richard (Kathy) Scranton of Show Low, AZ; David (Mary Jo) Scranton of Quincy; and Carol (Peter) Badami of Georgetown, TX; three grandchildren: Michael (Lydia) Scranton of Manor, TX; Joshua (Kristie) Scranton of Quincy; and Brent Rodhouse of Georgetown, TX; five great grandchildren: Ethan and Aaron Scranton; and Bray Gillum, Kenya, and Malea Mayfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters: Eva Carroll and Naomi Sweet. Services: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Grand View Burial Park, Hannibal, MO with Pastor Todd Hastings officiating. Burial: Grand View Burial Park, Hannibal, MO Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
