MUSCATINE, Iowa - Shirley Jean Hunter, 74, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011, peacefully in her home after a long battle with COPD and Lung Cancer. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death. Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Pastor Harold Schutte will officiate the service. Casket bearers will be Bill Ricklefs, Brad Wetzel, Wes Martin, Russ VanAcker, Joel Rock and Jeff Rock. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Following the burial there will be a time of food and fellowship in the Community Room at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the funeral home. Per Shirley's request, memorials on her behalf can be made to Iowa Hospice. The family has been very appreciative of the support and kindness of Iowa Hospice staff during this difficult time. ed Muscatine Schools. On November 18, 1953, Shirley married Marvin Hunter. They lived in Muscatine where they raised three daughters, Cathy Kent of Muscatine, Judy Vonnahme of Des Moines, and Pamela Hunter of Muscatine. Shirley retired from employment at the Muscatine Community Schools, where she had worked as a custodian, in 1996. Shirley enjoyed many hobbies, including working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, playing computer games, reading, growing beautiful flowers and trying new recipes to share with her family. She also looked forward to her nightly phone conversation with her best friend Margaret Rock. She is survived by her daughters; two brothers, Mike and Jerry; and many loving friends and family members. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1987; a sister, Mary; a brother, Bill; and her son-in-law, Daniel Vonnahme.
