Lee McMillen, 87, of Story City, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2022, at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa. A gathering of friends and family will be from 4-7 pm Thursday February 24, 2022 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way Ames, Iowa, with a 10:00 am Friday February 25, 2022 funeral service at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50010. Following the service the Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Lee was born on November 27, 1934 to Martha (Hon) and Voyne McMillen at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa . Lee was married to Lois Margy (Marge) Offield on February 14, 1954.
Lee was proceeded in death by his wife, and both his parents.
Lee was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather, brother, Son in-law, uncle, and friend to all. Many of Rick, Nancy, Laura, and the grandchildren's friends considered Lee as Dad or gram'pa.
Lee served in the Naval Reserves from March 19,1953 to Jan 4, 1961.
Often you could find Lee and Marge with family and friends playing cards, bowling, or enjoying each others company with the kids and grandkids. In the 70's, 80's and 90's Lee and Marge owned a small engine shop L&M Sales and Service on East Lincoln Way in Ames. After closing the Shop Lee continued to share himself with the Boy Scouts of America which he had continued from the age of 18 being the first Order of the Arrow Chief, and earned his way to the honor of Silver Beaver serving as a mentor and a leader for Eagle Scouts by sitting on the review board for many years.
Lee also contributed his time in the local post of the American Legion in which he became Commander. Lee was very proud of being part of the American Legion, and was most proud of being a 25 year member of the "Society of Forty Men & Eight Horses" an independent, invitation only, honor Society of American Veterans and Service members committed to Charitable and Patriotic aims.
He is survived by his children, Rick (Linda) McMillen, Nancy Brooks (Dennis), Laura Hennick (Dale); siblings, Peggy Bowers and Don McMillen; 13 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great-Great Grandchildren. And a large extended family (too many to count).
