Philip Danahy Kiernan

On June 29, 2022, we said goodbye to a good man, husband, father, granddad, and great granddad. Philip lived a full and rewarding life. Born in July of 1934 in Albany, New York, to Dr. Joseph O'Connor Kiernan and Mary Danahy Kiernan. Their children were Mary Kiernan Daly, Thomas J. Kiernan, Philip D. Kiernan, and Stephen M. Kiernan. Philip's education began at Cathedral Catholic School in Albany, NY. Then began his higher studies under the guiding hand of the Jesuit Priests at Cranwell Prep in Lenox, MA., and the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. There he made lifelong friendships with his roommates and classmates. He began his career with the United States Air Force in 1958. Philip was assigned to the Tactical Air Command as a Fighter Pilot. He served 22 years with distinction and received many medal commendations. In 1979, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and Veteran of the Vietnam War. Philip loved flying and was lovingly called, "the world's greatest fighter pilot". In 1959, he married Ruth Elizabeth Scott while stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, AZ. Mary), and Kimberly K. Peterson (Erik). They survive him as well as his grandchildren: Kiernan Bates, Ashton Bates, Streator Bates (Ali), Race Bates, David L. Kiernan (Jenna), Kristin E. D'Avolio (Matthew), Ridge Peterson, and Noelle Peterson. He also had 6 great grandchildren. He married a second time to his wife of 46 wonderful years, Mary Elaine Bishop. Together they enjoyed active, and adventure filled travels. Philip and Elaine settled in Mountain City, TX and in 2020 moved to Phoenix, AZ. Philip was able to claim visiting 49 states and many other countries. A Funeral Mass will be at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Scottsdale, AZ. at 10:30 AM on July 26, 2022. A Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 AM before Mass. Father Don Kline will be officiating the Mass. Interment will begin at 2:00 PM at the Veteran's Cemetery with full military honors due Philip in Phoenix. Fly with the Angels my love!
