A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Collegiate United Methodist Church/Wesley Foundation, 2622 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA. Visitation will be at the church starting at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served in Wesley Hall following the service. Army Band, serving in occupied Japan with the 25th Division Band. Following an honorable discharge, John graduated from Drake University in music education. He taught instrumental music in the Truro, Farrar, Polk City, Ballard and Ames Community Schools. John enjoyed performing on trumpet in dance bands for over 60 years, and was a long-time member of the Des Moines Municipal Band and the Ames Municipal Band. On February 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Patricia Jeanne Moorehead in Des Moines, IA. They were blessed with two children, Paula and James. John and Patricia shared 75 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Ames, daughter Paula Anderson and husband Paul of Ames, son Jim Burns of Ames, sister Sue Glass of Hannibal, MO, brother-in-law Richard Whisman of Alpine, CA, two grandchildren, Julie (Jason) Keen, Mark (Kristin) Anderson, four great-grandchildren, Connor Keen, Megan Keen, Gavin Anderson, and Greta Anderson, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Lena Burns, sister Donna Whisman of Alpine, CA, brother-in- law John Glass of Hannibal, MO, and in-laws Monte and Elva Moorehead. The family thanks the outstanding staff of Northridge Village for John's excellent and loving care. He enjoyed living there for over eight years.
