Stephen P. Fougere

Stephen P. Fougere, 94, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on February 23, 2024. He was the husband of Mary (Bottomley) Fougere. Born in Newport, RI on May 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Cleary) Fougere. Stephen grew up working with his father on their commercial fishing vessel, and thus began his lifelong love of the ocean. He took this love with him to work for the state of RI for over 30 years, first as a Saltwater Game Warden and Conservation Officer and later as the Chief of Law Enforcement. He also served in the US Navy Reserves and reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his retirement from the State, he and his wife continued their commercial fishing work and shared his knowledge with their grandchildren. Stephen is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary, and their children; Michael Fougere of Florida (Miriam), Katherine Fecteau (Paul) of Portsmouth, Patricia Baker of Newport, Marie Key of Saunderstown, and Annette Fougere Duke of Bristol, a sister Jeannette Perry of Portsmouth, and 11 grandchildren, 20 Great-Grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
