Eugene Shank, long-time Antigo resident, died on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison. He was 102 years old. He was born on July 14, 1922 in Antigo, the son of Emil and Amanda (Koch )Shank. He married Jeanne Theisen on June 14, 1952 at St. John's Catholic Church in Antigo. She preceded him in death on December 6, 2020. Gene was a graduate of Mayking Grade School. As a young man he worked with his father, hauling cattle and logging. A World War II veteran, Gene served in the United States Navy aboard the USS LENAWEE, an attack transport, in the Pacific theater. He was at Iwo Jima and other battle zones and witnessed the signing of the treaty at Tokyo Bay. Upon his return from war, he began working at the Midland gas station in Antigo (Co-op oil) and retired as manager in 1984. He was a longtime member of Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo where served as an usher. Survivors include a daughter, Karen and son-in-law Jerry Mendl of Middleton; a grandson, Nathan Mendl and his wife Keri of Madison; and his sister, Phyllis Hunchusky of Peoria, Illinois, as well as nieces and nephews. h by his sisters, Helen Pecha, Ione Wheeler, Adeline Kieper, and Ruby Gresch; a brother, Ruben Shank; and brothers-in-law, Albert Pecha, Eugene Wheeler, Ehrich Gresch, and Tom Hunchusky. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 19 at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo with the Reverend David Karolus officiating. Burial will take place in the Queen of Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
