Virginia Smith

Virginia Morgan Smith, age 85, of Albia, died December 21, 2009 at the Monroe Care Center. She was born February 27, 1924, to Susan and Jenkin Morgan. She married Robert W. Smith on May 25, 1945 in Albia. She grew up in Albia, graduated from Albia High School, and attended Albia Community College. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. D.K. Orelup and at the Albia Public Library. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was the Children's and Chancel Choir director for many years. She wrote Christian music for choirs, special groups, solos, choral response, Christmas, Easter, and other special services. She was chairman of organizing the Last Supper dramatizations that traveled all over Iowa for twenty-five years. Following the Vietnam War, through the Trinity United Methodist Church Outreach Mission Program, she initiated a humanitarian program for Southeast Asian refugees to facilitate their adaptation to the American culture. She was honored by the Governor of the state of Iowa for her efforts. She led Bible study groups. rs. Through Trinity United Methodist Church, Virginia and Bob introduced the Albia community to Dial-a-Devotion; a daily scripture lesson and prayer request phone service. She was also a member and past president of PEO Local Chapter H. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. of Albia, son, Andy (Sandi) Smith of Bryan, TX; daughters, Julie Watson of Williamsburg, VA, Christine (Marco) Aguilar of Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren: David, Matt, and Doug Smith, Angela Johnson, Holly Anderson, Paige Montoya, Preston Aguilar, Krisant Aguilar, and Analiese Vasquez, and fourteen great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Evan, and six sisters, Babe, Edna, Maxine, Charlotte, Eloise, and Lucille. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial in Virginia's name is being set up through Trinity United Methodist Church to assist families who are dealing with the Alzheimer's disease.
