Dorothy was born August 11, 1935 in Palmyra, Iowa to Bud and Ardola Wilson Nicholls. She attended school in Des Moines and graduated from Carlisle High School in 1953. After graduation she worked at the phone company in Des Moines. Dorothy was set up on a blind date, going dancing at the Happy Times Ranch with a young man named Short Chandler. They were married on August 31, 1956 and were blessed with two children: Merna and Martin. They shared a tremendous husband and wife relationship for nearly 55 years, doing everything together. They worked hard raising Quarter Horses, going to horse sales and shows. Dorothy and Short also took time once a year to go on a special non-working vacation. They enjoyed rodeos all over the country and loved seeing all the sights.
Whether it was teaching a dance lesson or reading a story, she loved her time spent with family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and caring grandmother. She was a very giving person and loved to help others in the community by donating her time and talents to worthy causes. Dorothy enjoyed embroidery, showing horses, dancing, and cooking.
