a in 1939. He became secretary to the Board of Education for three years before entering the service. Bob served in the US Army in the 103rd Infantry during WWII in the European Theatre and went through the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Following discharge from the service, Bob was the owner of H.E. Smith Heating and Air Conditioning Co. He also owned and operated several automatic car washes. He came out of retirement to manage the Muscatine Mall. Bob was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 304, American Legion Post 27, 33 Club, Kiwanis (charter member), Ram Rod Coffee Club, and the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. Bob was one of the founders and was the first president of Muscatine United Way. He served as President and Board Member of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and YMCA. He served 33years as a director of Central State Bank and also served on the Muscatine Power and Water Board of Directors. He was one of the four organizers of the first cable TV station in Muscatine which was taken over by Muscatine Power and Water. He slso served as chairman of the Mad Creek Flood Control Committee. Those left to honor his memory include one son, Robert L. Toborg and wife, Kris, of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Margaret 'Maggie' York and husband, Richard, of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Dr. Ted Toborg and wife, Michelle, of Clemmons, North Carolina, Brandon York and wife, Julie, of Kansas City, Missouri, Libby Pollock and husband, Jeff, of Atlanta, Georgia, Summer Anderson of North Liberty, and Maddi Lawler of Cedar Rapids; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Dorothy Tiedemann.
