and Eddie have been inseparable from their first meeting as babies since Eddie's father, Babe Grant, was Danny Dowe's best friend and Best Man at Danny and Gini's Wedding in 1957. Eddie worked alongside Darin both with the Miami Dolphins and then later as they entered their law enforcement careers. At the age of 16, Darin, who loved Scuba Diving, became a Master Scuba Diver so that he could teach diving. He continued to dive throughout his life. Darin began his career with the Broward Sheriff's Office at the age of 18. During his 23 years of service, he held the following positions: Explorer, CSA in the DUI/BAT Unit, Correctional Officer, Deputy, Detective, SWAT Team Member, SNIPER, Sergeant, and Lieutenant/Shift Commander in District 11-Pompano Beach. During Darin's exceptional career, he worked in Bike Patrol, Gang Unit, and Counter-Terrorism. He was also an Instructor and taught on Gangs to numerous law enforcement agencies. Darin had several close calls in the line of duty. He saved multiple lives during his time working in the city of Dania. Darin achieved countless letters of commendation and awards including Deputy of the Month. He also wrote the grant for, and completely designed the BEAR for the SWAT Team. Additionally, he was an accomplished writer, authoring many tactical articles for law enforcement magazines such as the Tactical Edge, Tactical Response, Law and Order, and various others. Darin was just like his father by having the same warrior mentality in fighting his cancer. Darin's father, who suffered a stroke after being on the job with the Broward Sheriff's Office for five years, had to retire and survived against all odds for five more years. Darin fought a similar battle after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2006. He underwent two surgeries and extensive Chemo and radiation therapy. All the while, he insisted that doctors do nothing that would rob him of his eyesight and his career. Even after undergoing his first surgery, one of Darin's greatest achievements was that he became a photographer specializing in shuttle launches at NASA. Darin's passion resulted in his photos being published in international and national publications. Darin never let his sickness interfere with his career until this past December when the cancer returned in a form which was inoperable. On January 27, 2012, Darin lost his fierce battle in the presence of his beloved mother, Gini, and surrounded by friends and family including numerous brothers and sisters of the Broward Sheriff's Office and law enforcement community. Darin is preceded in death by his father, Danny Dowe; his grandparents, Louis B. and Cynthia Veenstra and his uncle, Norman Dowe. Darin is survived by his mother, Gini Dowe; his rescued Puppy, Mandy; his aunt Penny Omarzu from Pebble Beach, CA. ; cousins Peter Omarzu from California and Christopher Omarzu from Wyoming; an aunt Helen Sydell from Framingham, MI.; cousins, Tommy, Clifford, Cathy and Barbara Jean Sydell from Framingham, MA.; cousin Marylynn Austin from Harbor Springs, MI.; cousin Tammy Urbina from Flint, MI.; an aunt Mary Wisniewski from Grand Blanc, MI.; cousin Rick Barkey from Grand Blanc, MI.; an uncle Roland Dowe from San Antonio, TX.; his aunt, Barbara Moore of Houston, TX. and numerous other cousins. We take great comfort in knowing that Darin and his father are having a beer and looking down lovingly on their beloved wife and mother, Gini. Gini is comforted knowing that Darin and Danny are home in the arms of Jesus. The Darin David Dowe Brain Tumor Foundation is being established by Darin's mother, Gini Dowe.
