Rick Lynn Wirth, one of four sons of Doris Mae (Horton) and Harry Milo Wirth, was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa on January 14, 1954. He grew up Glenwood, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1973. In 1972 and while still in high school, Rick began his 21 year service to the Iowa National Guard, retiring in 1994. Rick briefly worked at D & L in Red Oak, Iowa before taking a janitorial position with Henningsen Foods in Malvern. Rick met his future bride, Julie Hanson, who also worked at Henningsen's. They were married at the Malvern United Methodist Church on May 31, 1975. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Eric. Rick became the custodian at the Nishna Cottage and later the Heritage House residential care facility in Malvern where he worked for 20 years. Rick became an active duty member of the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department. In 1999, Rick received the prestigious Malvern Firefighter of the Year Award in recognition of his devotion to duty. Rick rarely missed a meeting, training event, or fire call and he assisted Malvern Rescue whenever additional help was needed. ick suffered a cardiac arrest at their Malvern home on February 6, 2005h and died at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha on February 9, 2005 at the age of 51 years and 25 days. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael Wirth, and niece Wanda Wirth. Rick is survived by his wife Julie and son Eric of Malvern; brothers Steven Wirth and his wife Chris of Clarksville, Tennessee and Bruce Wirth of Malvern; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
