Dr. Elwood "Jack" Young

Dr. Elwood Marvin Young, one of three children of Vera Clara (Brown) Young and John William Young, was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa on February 19, 1922. Jack, as he was known by family and friends, grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1940. Following school, Jack enlisted in the United States Army and served with the infantry in Central Europe. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 and returned home. Jack and Bonita B. Creek were married in Council Bluffs on December 22, 1946. Shortly after their marriage, Jack and Bonnie moved to Chicago, Illinois where Jack attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He graduated in 1949, and the couple returned to Council Bluffs. On February 19, 1951, Jack established an optometry practice in Glenwood, Iowa. In 1952, he and Bonnie moved to Glenwood. Bonnie worked as secretary at the Glenwood State School until their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Jacque Diane and Shelly Kay. rch of Christ in Glenwood. Outside of his practice, Jack loved to play golf and cribbage, and enjoyed cats. He was one of the ten original founders of the Glenwood Golf Course, organizing and helping see to its construction. He always enjoyed teaching the fundamentals of golf as much as playing. After his retirement, Jack and Buck Edmonds volunteered for many years as assistant coaches to the Glenwood and Malvern High School Golf Teams. Jack's health forced him to move to the Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, Iowa in April of 2005. Jack and Bonnie had been married 58 years when Jack died at the Manor on May 26, 2005 at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 7 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William Young and sister Maxine Hillman. Jack is survived by his wife Bonnie Young of Glenwood; and daughters Jacque Young and her husband Howard Kamish of Glenwood and Shelly Lynch Lewis and her husband Gregory of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren Kyle Lynch, Sara Lewis, Jessica Young Kamish and Whitney Young Kamish; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
