Donald Howard Campbell, one of twelve children of Howard I. Campbell and Lulu Elgia (Colwell) Campbell, was born July 9, 1928 near Orient, Iowa. Donald grew up in Orient where he graduated from high school in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 28, 1946 and served until February 2, 1947. Following the service, Donald returned home to Orient and began his lifelong career working for the Burlington and Northern Railroad. Donald and Carmen Sue Thompson were united in marriage and made their home in Creston, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Charme Susan and Gregory Don. Donald and Carmen later divorced and Donald moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. After his retirement in 1975, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Donald met Mary Ann (Mass) Oberman of Council Bluffs. They were married on November 25, 2000 at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs. Donald and Mary Ann enjoyed dancing, playing cards and activities at the Eagles Lodge. A special enjoyment was time they shared with Mary Ann's family. In May of 2004, Donald suffered a disabling stroke. rsing home. Donald and Mary Ann had been married almost seven years when Donald died on August 28, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. He had attained the age of 79 years, 1 month, and 19 days. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister Zola and sisters, Lela Coleman, Merna Coleman, and Ileen Pote; brothers, Joe Campbell, Emmett Campbell, Harold Campbell, Fred Campbell and Robert Campbell. Donald is survived by his wife Mary Ann Campbell of Council Bluffs; children, Charme Nelson and husband Dennis of Lenox, IA and Greg Campbell of Waterloo, IL; sister Lola Stowell of Greenfield, IA and brother Carl Campbell of Orient, IA; stepdaughters Beverly Cain and husband Steve of Oakland, Iowa, Darlene Pilling and husband Dave of Carson, IA, and Bobbette Brammer and husband Herb of Macedonia, IA; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; four step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
