Richard A. Bishop

Richard Allen Bishop, one of six children of James Richard and Margaret Dicyann (Wallace) Bishop, was born on October 22, 1921 in Silver City, Iowa. He grew up and attended schools in southwest Iowa and graduated from Macedonia High School in 1941. Following school, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. North Carolina in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. During the service and while on leave at home, Richard and Bonnie Clayton were married on August 31, 1944 in Macedonia. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Allen Faye, David Carl, Lynda Darlene, Lynn Donald, and Amylyn Samantha. They farmed near Atlantic, Iowa and Oakland, Iowa. During his farming career, Richard also began working in 1958 at the Sutherland Lumber Company in Omaha, Nebraska. He retired from Sutherlands in 1984. Richard was a member of the Macedonia United Methodist Church, a life-time member of the Rock Island, Illinois VFW Post 1303; and a member of the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Association. n. Richard and Bonnie had just recently moved to Muscatine, Iowa to live near their son David. Richard passed away on August 26, 2010 at the Lutheran Homes Society in Muscatine at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 4 days. He was preceded in death by his father James Bishop and mother Margaret Bishop Tibbles; daughter Lynda Weppler; brother Orville Bishop; and sisters, Lois Herbert and husband Michael, and Wanda Mitchell. Richard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bonnie Bishop of Muscatine; children, Allen Bishop and wife Jeanette of Chadwick, MO, David Bishop and wife Colette of Muscatine, Lynn Bishop and wife Rose of Manassas, VA, and Amylyn Bishop of Shelby, IA; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brothers, Wayne Bishop and wife Delores of Cocoa Beach, FL and Seth Bishop and wife Mary of Lynnwood, WA; other relatives and friends. Memorials suggested to the Macedonia United Methodist Church or Oakland Manor.
