Bonita B. (Creek) Young, one of three children of John Lee Creek and Ruby Pearl (Hutton) Creek, was born in Libertyville, Iowa on November 25, 1925. Bonnie, as she was known by family and friends, grew up in Libertyville and graduated from Libertyville High School in 1942. Her first job was at her dad's service station, where she was instructed to pump the gas, wash the windshield, and most importantly, smile. Bonnie then attended business school in Ottumwa, Iowa. She began working with the Soil Conservation Office and was then transferred to Council Bluffs, where she met her future husband, Elwood Marvin Young, known as Jack. Jack and Bonnie were married December 22, 1946 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Jack attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. Bonnie worked various secretarial jobs in Chicago. Jack graduated in 1949 and the couple returned to Council Bluffs. In 1950, he purchased an optometry practice in Glenwood, Iowa and in 1952, they moved to Glenwood. Jacque Diane and Shelly Kay. Bonnie began working in the optometric practice after their daughters were in grade school. Bonnie worked in the practice for over 40 years, helping with eye wear selection, patient testing, and bookkeeping. Jack and Bonnie joined the First Congregational United Church of Christ in 1953. Bonnie served as church clerk for many years and was also church president. She was known for her delectable holiday divinity candy. Bonnie also served as secretary for the Southwest Iowa Association for UCC for eight years. She was board secretary to the Loess Hills Estates for 10 years and a member of Chapter FF P.E.O., holding various offices and positions. Bonnie helped to organize early hospice efforts in our community in the mid 1980s. She enjoyed golf, bridge, gardening, reading and traveling. Bonnie enjoyed the comfort of her own home until the fall of 2011. The home which she and Jack had built in 1960 overlooked Glenwood from the North. She cherished the view of Glenwood in the valley. Bonnie passed away peacefully at the Hospice with Heart home in Glenwood on December 21, 2011. She was preceded in death by her beloved Jack; both parents; and brothers, Benny Lee Creek and Byron Edwin Creek. Bonnie is survived by daughters, Dr. Jacque Young and husband Howard Kamish of Glenwood, and Shelly Lynch Lewis and husband Gregory of New Virginia, IA; four grandchildren; twin great-grandsons; sisters-in-law, Millie Creek of Fairfield, IA, and Bonnie Creek of Des Moines, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. A memorial fund has been established.
