Donald Leroy Smith age 57 of Madison, Alabama, formerly of Collins died on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama after a short illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins. Donald was born on November 20, 1954 in Nevada to Russell and Mary (Boozell) Smith. He graduated in 1973 from Collins High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. Donald served in Korea, Colorado, North Carolina, Panama, and Alabama. While in Korea, Donald met the love of his life, Ahn. Together they have two children, Sue Ann and John. They were married for several years before divorcing. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Athens, Alabama for many years. A memorial fund has been established in loving memory for the Freland Carver American Legion Post #81 in Collins.
