Richard H. "Dick" Nielson

Richard Hans Nielson was born September 13, 1930, in LuVerne, son of Harold and Helen (Wegner) Nielson. He grew up on a farm near LuVerne where he attended country school graduating from LuVerne High School in 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 until 1955. Dick was married to Joyce Durant on February 26, 1957, in Worthington, Minnesota. He farmed most of his life near LuVerne. Dick enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. He was an avid collector of antiques, Santa Clauses, and Hot Wheels. Dick spent a lot of time at auctions, watching westerns and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Dick has a special love for his country, the American Flag and the American Legion. He was a past member of the LuVerne American Legion Post # 664 and was a member of the VFW Post # 4521 in Algona where he served as chaplain for the past 28 years. He also was a member of the Seely Walsh American Legion Post # 425 in Whittemore. He is survived by his wife Joyce of LuVerne; five children, David Nielson of LuVerne, Pamela Hendrix of Humboldt, Lorie Hendrix of Algona, Todd Nielson of Algona, and Christal (Bob) Southwick of Algona; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother Harold (Carmen) Nielson Jr. of LuVerne; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Kenny Hendrix; a sister, Marilyn Kruse; and a brother, Robert Nielson.
