Mary Evelyn was born, January 29, 1923 in Great Oak Township, the daughter of James and Alberta (Bough) Mehan. She attended country grade school, and she was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Emmetsburg and the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On July 3, 1946, Mary Evelyn Mehan was united in marriage to James Noonan at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Mary Evelyn taught country school and was featured in a book "They Opened the Door and Let My Future In" inspired by country school teachers. She was an avid reader and collector of teddy bears. While raising her family, she volunteered many hours as a 4-H leader. Mary Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society in Ayrshire, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Palo Alto County Hospital Foundation Board and Auxiliary.
