Harold M. Riley

Harold M. Riley, 88, of Keokuk, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 15, 2013. Harold was born March 8, 1924, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Howard and Grace Riley. Harold graduated from Keokuk High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division and was a member of the legendary Band of Brothers serving in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge. Post World War II, Harold married Esther Paulyne Pontius on August 3, 1947. He was the manager for many years of the Liberty Loan Company. Harold retired in 1983 from the Keokuk Savings Bank, where he served as Vice President. Harold was a lifetime member for 65 years of the American Legion, Post 41, Keokuk, Iowa. He was a past commander and served as bookkeeper for the Legion. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Legion. He participated, with others, in the effort to honor American Veterans with a Memorial which now stands in his beloved Keokuk. He greatly enjoyed time spent with his family and his many friends. He is also survived by his brother Harley, of Brownsville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Paulyne of 49 years, three sisters, five brothers, and daughter-in-law Mary A celebration of his life will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk. Burial with military rites will be in Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 on Monday, February 25, 2013, at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center at 917 Blondeau Street in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post #41.
